Keynote:
Weathering the Storm of COVID-19 and Charting a Path Fo...
Keynote, November 10, 2020,
9:15 am - 10:00 am
In this keynote address, Dr. Fiat will use research to highlight the importance of paraeducator mental health and will introduce a practical framework for enhancing psychological resilience in the face of Coronavirus. Tasked with supporting the social-emotional, behavioral, and learning needs of students, paraeducators play an essential role in schools. Though paraeducators unequivocally have one of the most challenging jobs, their positive presence helps to buffer the negative impact of toxic stress and trauma on students and their families. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic has produced significant hardships for many paraeducators and for our profession as a whole. We are caught in the perfect storm of physical illness, anxiety, economic instability, social isolation, political polarization, and social unrest. Continual unpredictability paired with rapidly shifting situations can make it feel impossible to stay afloat, let alone navigate this unprecedented calamity to reach our goals. Anchored in research on wellbeing and resilience, the Seven C’s is a novel coping framework designed to help educators and caregivers survive and thrive during the COVID-19 crisis. During this keynote address, attendees will receive an overview of the Seven C’s and learn how applying them can reduce stress and improve overall mental health. The cascading effects of improving paraeducator mental health on the social-emotional and behavioral functioning of students will be discussed. Attendees will also leave this keynote with concrete ideas for contributing to a positive school culture while continuing to advance their professional goals.

Navigating the Seven C's: Coping in a Crisis while Cari...
When it comes to promoting students’ social-emotional and academic success, paraeducators have one of the most stressful yet essential occupations. Unfortunately, few groups of professionals have been as adversely affected by the Coronavirus pandemic as paraeducators, whose jobs are more important than ever before. This breakout session will provide attendees with practical skills to cope with the devastating effects of COVID-19 while continuing to excel in their role of supporting students. By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
1) Understand the impact of ongoing stress on one’s brain, body, and behavior.
2) Discuss how the mental health of caregivers influences the children around them.
3) Identify the Seven C’s for helping caregivers cope in a crisis.
4) Apply the Seven C’s framework to help themselves and those around them survive and thrive.
To achieve these learning objectives, this breakout session will combine didactic teaching, hands-on activities, and group discussion.

Incentives to Impact the Longevity of Paraprofessionals
From research, I will share incentives that impact the longevity of paraprofessionals. A summary of research will be shared with the participants from a paraprofessional perspective, teacher perspective and administrator perspective. Sharing what each group, what they can do to improve the job satisfaction of paraprofessionals. Research will be shared about one single case study conducted measuring an incentive and what trends were present in the current research tied to past research. Below is my abstract from my research.

Changing Course in Challenging Behavior
When talking with Early Childhood professionals, the biggest challenge discussed is around challenging behavior. Most teachers and paraprofessionals know what they aren’t supposed to do in working with challenging behavior, but what are they supposed to do? During this time together, we will define “challenging behavior” and ways to get ahead of those undesired behaviors, as well as strategies to decrease challenging behaviors in a classroom setting. Participants will leave this time with strategies that can be applied the following day.

Strategies for Paras in the Early Childhood Classroom
Paraeducators wear many hats! Trying to figure out this role and all that goes with it can be exhausting. We can, though, boil it all down to the student and the relationships that are built within the school setting. Specific roles can be defined and outlined, teams can be set up and plans made to help students grow, learn and thrive at school. The key, however, to the success of all the outlining and planning is the relationships that students develop at school. Paraeducators are often the first contact a student has at school, paraeducators are often the adult in the small group or individual workplan, and often are the touchstone for students. Pareducators are the ones who hear the stories students tell, the ones who witness the struggles with work and the ones who are providing the safe space needed for learning to happen. Students who feel safe, who trust the adult working with them, and who feel free to try and fail and try again are going to be successful learners. The communication between the student and the paraeducator and, in turn, the paraeducator and the teacher plays a key in a student’s learning trajectory and success. In this session, find simple, usable and (hopefully!) valuable tools to use as you work to build relationships and encourage learning!

Fostering Executive Function by Supporting Positive Rel...
Interactions and relationships are the heart of the classroom. In order to promote an increase of social-emotional and academic learning outcomes, teachers must first focus and value supporting positive and intentional relationships. Throughout this interactive session, attendees will self-reflect on current strategies they implement to support relationships in their classroom, evaluate the role relationships play in their classroom, and leave with new ideas on how to better develop relationships with the students they serve. An additional component of the session involves promoting executive functioning skills to help support self-regulating behaviors in children through relationship building.
